DIRE STRAITS EN MADRID 1991

Sesenta mil personas entregadas de forma absoluta, rendidas sin concesiones desde la primera canción. Así de satisfactorio fue el único concierto, por ahora, del grupo británico Dire Straits en Madrid, último de la primera parte de su actual gira española. No hay que olvidar que los sultanes del swing regresan a España en agosto, y el 6 de octubre a Madrid, con un solo recital en la plaza de toros de Las Ventas. Mark Knopfler y su banda utilizaron un volumen de sonido prudente, y una escenografía superior a la de otras ocasiones, para conquistar a un público que conectó con cada una de sus insinuaciones melódicas.

Eran las diez en punto de la noche cuando sonaron las palmas y se encendieron los mecheros. El recibimiento adecuado para la banda encargada de levantar la veda de conciertos veraniegos. Mark Knopfler apareció sobre el escenario en solitario, vestido con una camisa blanca, pantalones vaqueros y una cinta negra sujetando su escaso pelo. Saludó a las sesenta mil almas que poblaban el Calderón como un troglodita, con un simple "Hugh!" ' e interpretó sin más preámbulos el resto de un repertorio marcado por ventas millonarias y números uno.Guitarra en ristre, Knopfler acometió los primeros acordes de su último gran éxito: Calling Elvis. Tenía una mano levantada de forma mesiánica, y un solitario foco blanco iluminaba su silueta. De sopetón entró el grupo, y con él un arrogante equipo de luces. Dire Straits estaban en Madrid, y el público respondió a su llamada con entusiasmo colectivo.Los vecinos de las casas próximas al estadio se quejaron, sin embargo, de vibraciones en sus viviendas. Los bomberos madrileños atribuyeron en un primer momento estas vibraciones al concierto. Finalmente la cosa quedó en nada. Dire Straits continuaron con su repertorio, entre el delirio del público, y los vecinos regresaron tranquilamente a sus casas. En el interior del estadio la noche era tan agradable como la actuación del grupo, cimentada en canciones melódicamente sencillas y en el carisma del líder de la banda.Y precisamente ejerciendo de líder, Mark Knopfler pidió tranquilidad al público de las primeras filas. Los más madrugadores, que habían ocupado esa privilegiada posición haciendo colas desde primera hora de la mañana, caían ahora como moscas debido al calor y las apreturas. Una vez superado este pequeño desbarajuste inicial, Dire Straits se centraron en sus interminables canciones.
Diez minutos duró Calling Elvis, y otros tantos los temas interpretados inmediatamente después. Romeo and Juliette, el primero de sus viejos éxitos, no rompió la regla. Una versión larga y cadenciosa cautivó a los fieles seguidores del grupo, pero también aburrió algo a los más escépticos: "Tienes tiempo de ir al baño, y también por unas cervezas; puedes estar seguro de que cuando vuelvas siguen tocando la misma canción...".
Sultans of swing provocó el delirio. Para entonces no había dudas sobre la calidad del grupo y la intensidad del concierto. Dire Straits arrasaban en Madrid, último concierto de la primera parte de una gira española inacabada. Knopfler y sus músicos (John IlIsley y Phil Palmer en las guitarras, Alan Clark en los teclados, Guy Fletcher en el saxo, Paul Franklin en la guitarra de pedal, Chris Whitten en la batería y Danny Cummings en las percusiones) regresarán a finales de verano.

Los 16.000 asistentes al campo de Usera, que habían pagado su localidad de 1.800 pesetas, no merecieron el trato previo en las inmediaciones del recinto, con la espera larga y agobiante en las colas, y tampoco las pésimas condiciones del lugar correspondieron justamente a tal desembolso, y menos a su dignidad como personas. Además, cerca de 2.000 espectadores entraron al terreno deportivo cuando Dire Straits ya habían empezado, con media hora de retraso. La infanta Cristina, hija menor de los Reyes, asistió al concierto.El grupo de intérpretes que encabeza Mark Knopfler representó con eficacia su obra rockera, que permanecerá hasta marzo del año próximo en varios carteles del mundo. Ofrecieron todos los números con medida precisión, sin acciones espontáneas ni intenciones de improvisación, siempre deseada en un repertorio de canciones en directo.

Knopfler, genio virtuoso que promete progresar más allá de los límites del rock y hacia la fusión de los estilos, se recrea en sus actuaciones, canta con sobriedad y puntea y repuntea sus guitarras con la sencillez de lo cotidiano, como quien se cepilla los dientes cada mañana. Apareció y saludó con una toalla blanca, y más tarde, terminada la pieza animosa, Walk of life, amagó con su guitarrista el inicio de un tema fuerte y se paró para quitarse la camisa y quedarse en camiseta blanca. Todo como en Bilbao, donde el grupo actuó el pasado sábado en el inicio de su gira por España, que continuará en Barcelona.
Sonido imperfecto
El sonido con acoples en varias canciones fue imperfecto: en Romeo and Juliet apenas se apreció el arpegio en guitarra acústica del líder, cuya voz tapaba en muchos momentos la instrumentación. Pero el público necesitaba divertirse, identificarse con tantas canciones escuchadas y saltar y tararear al ritmo de Sultans of swing, grandiosa composición; de Money for nothing, prueba indiscutible de las virtudes actuales de su compositor, o Tunnel of love, plasmación graciosa de un estilo muy hábil.Jack Sonni, el nuevo guitarrista para la formación, es un músico muy estadounidense, con ademanes de inquietud en escena parecidos a los de Bruce Springsteen e imagen más que similar a la de Steve van Zandt, amigo y ex compañero del boss. Sonni añadió garra a un espectáculo lineal, y el saxofonista Chris White, calor sonoro en los fragmentos más delicados. Por ejemplo, aquellos instantes en que Sultans of swing bajaba de ritmo y el teclista, Allan Clarke, fino siempre en sensibilidad, recogía la melodía y enlazaba con el saxo. Todos los músicos de guitarra, bajo o saxo pudieron moverse por el escenario con instrumentos inalámbricos.
Hasta el primer bis, todas las canciones sonaron por él mismo orden que en la capital vizcaína. Brothers in arms, el tema que titula el último elepé de este grupo británico, fue la balada de regalo que preparó la segunda reaparición de rigor, con Solid rock y el final instrumental de The Local Hero, aclamada por los miles de seguidores, mientras las luces del campo se encendían y los roadies inicia ban la recogida de bultos y apara tos sobre el escenario.
Locales adecuados
La muchedumbre salió tranquila pero apretada, por un solo paso del fondo del estadio, primero, y por las dos únicas puertas de acceso al recinto, después. Nada pasó. El folión con carreras de perseguidos por los jinetes policiales había acontecido minutos antes del final de la actuación.Estos hechos reclaman la necesidad de soluciones inminentes para una parte cada día mayor de la población española que gusta del rock y de sus espectáculos, y que, aun en estos días, está obligada a asistir a locales o estadio construidos para otros menesteres que no reúnen los requisitos de calidad acústica ni de comodidad, ni otras condiciones. Aunque el rock haya entrado un poco tarde en nuestras vidas.
